A case was reported where s->io_buffer_index can be out of range.
The report skimped on the details but it seems to be triggered
by s->lba == -1 on the READ/READ CD paths (e.g. by sending an
ATAPI command with LBA = 0xFFFFFFFF). For now paper over it
with assertions. The first one ensures that there is no overflow
when incrementing s->io_buffer_index, the second checks for the
buffer overrun.
Note that the buffer overrun is only a read, so I am not sure
if the assertion failure is actually less harmful than the overrun.

An out-of-bounds access issue was found in the SLIRP user networking
implementation of QEMU. It could occur while processing ARP/NCSI

respective protocol headers and payload. A privileged guest user may use

One final update for qemu-5.2, implementing an instruction that we
already should have, given the ISA version we claim to support. Sorry
for the lateness, I've been on holiday.
This isn't a regression, obviously, so if it misses qemu-5.2 it's not
a disaster, but it would be nice to have. The risk is low that it
would break any existing instructions.

Commit 205fa50750 ("qcow2: Add subcluster support to zero_in_l2_slice()")
introduced a subtle change to code in zero_in_l2_slice:
It swapped the order of
1. qcow2_cache_entry_mark_dirty(s->l2_table_cache, l2_slice);
2. set_l2_entry(s, l2_slice, l2_index + i, QCOW_OFLAG_ZERO);
3. qcow2_free_any_clusters(bs, old_offset, 1, QCOW2_DISCARD_REQUEST);
To
1. qcow2_cache_entry_mark_dirty(s->l2_table_cache, l2_slice);
2. qcow2_free_any_clusters(bs, old_offset, 1, QCOW2_DISCARD_REQUEST);
3. set_l2_entry(s, l2_slice, l2_index + i, QCOW_OFLAG_ZERO);
It seems harmless, however the call to qcow2_free_any_clusters can
trigger a cache flush which can mark the L2 table as clean, and
assuming that this was the last write to it, a stale version of it
will remain on the disk.
Now we have a valid L2 entry pointing to a freed cluster. Oops.

When deleting queue pair, purge pending RX packets if any.
Example of problematic flow:
1. Bring up q35 VM with tap (vhost off) and virtio-net or e1000e
2. Run ping flood to the VM NIC ( 1 ms interval)
3. Hot unplug the NIC device (device_del)
During unplug process one or more packets come, the NIC
can't receive, tap disables read_poll
4. Hot plug the device (device_add) with the same netdev
The tap stays with read_poll disabled and does not receive
any packets anymore (tap_send never triggered)

Support for migration of vfio devices is still in flux. Developers
are attempting to add support for new devices and new architectures,
but none are yet readily available for validation. We have concerns
whether we're transferring device resources at the right point in the
migration, whether we're guaranteeing that updates during pre-copy are
migrated, and whether we can provide bit-stream compatibility should
any of this change. Even the question of whether devices should
participate in dirty page tracking during pre-copy seems contentious.
In short, migration support has not had enough soak time and it feels
premature to mark it as supported.
Create an experimental option such that we can continue to develop.

way it complains about too-short underlining, but it looks odd;
make the underlines of section headers the right length
* Indent of paragraphs makes them render as blockquotes;
remove the indent so they just render as normal text
* Leading 'o' isn't rst markup, so it just renders as a literal
"o"; reformat as a subsection heading instead
* "QEMU" in the document title and section headings are a bit
odd and unnecessary since this is the QEMU manual; delete
or rephrase them

The Linux kernel doesn't use the official bkpt insn for breakpoints;
instead it uses three instructions in the guaranteed-to-UNDEF space,
and generates SIGTRAP for these rather than the SIGILL that most
UNDEF insns generate:
https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v5.9.8/source/arch/arm/kernel/ptrace.c#L197
Make QEMU treat these insns specially too. The main benefit of this
is that if you're running a debugger on a guest program that runs
into a GCC __builtin_trap() or LLVM "trap because execution should
never reach here" then you'll get the expected signal rather than a
SIGILL.

The semihosting SYS_HEAPINFO call is supposed to return an array
of four guest addresses:
* base of heap memory
* limit of heap memory
* base of stack memory
* limit of stack memory
Some semihosting programs (including those compiled to use the
'newlib' embedded C library) use this call to work out where they
should initialize themselves to.
QEMU's implementation when in system emulation mode is very
simplistic: we say that the heap starts halfway into RAM and
continues to the end of RAM, and the stack starts at the top of RAM
and works down to the bottom. Unfortunately the code assumes that
the base address of RAM is at address 0, so on boards like 'virt'
where this is not true the addresses returned will all be wrong and
the guest application will usually crash.
Conveniently since all Arm boards call arm_load_kernel() we have the
base address of the main RAM block in the arm_boot_info struct which
is accessible via the CPU object. Use this to return sensible values
from SYS_HEAPINFO.

The GCC check-tcg (user) test in particular was very prone to timing
out on Travis. We only actually need to move the some-softmmu builds
across as we already have coverage for linux-user.
As --enable-debug-tcg does increase the run time somewhat as more
debug is put in let's restrict that to just the plugins build. It's
unlikely that a plugins enabled build is going to hide a sanity
failure in core TCG code so let the plugin builds do the heavy lifting
on checking TCG sanity so the non-plugin builds can run swiftly.
Now the only remaining check-tcg builds on Travis are for the various

A Linux binary will have the string "S390EP" at address 0x10008,
which is important in getting the guest up off the ground. In the
case of a reboot (specifically chreipl going to a new device),
we should defer to the PSW at address zero for the new config,
which will re-write "S390EP" from the new image.
Let's clear it out at this point so that a reipl to, say, a DASD
passthrough device drives the IPL path from scratch without disrupting
disrupting the order of operations for other boots.
Rather than hardcoding the address of this magic (again), let's
define it somewhere so that the two users are visibly related.

If, for example, we boot off a virtio device and chreipl to a vfio-ccw

with the Format-0 CCW being generated:
0x0: 00080000 80010000

The data address will be overwritten with the correct value (0x0), but
the apparent data chain bit will cause subsequent memory to be used as

Remove the "default y" for USB_XHCI_SYSBUS because
sysbus devices are not user creatable; boards that use them will
specify them manually with "imply" or "select" clauses.
It would be nice to keep the ability to remove PCIe and USB from microvm,
since thos can be disabled on the command line and therefore should not
be included if QEMU is configured --without-default-devices. However
it's too late for 5.2 to figure out a place for the DSDT creation code.

If expected_args is 0, qtest frees the argument vector and then returns it
nevertheless. Coverity complains; in practice this is not an issue because
expected_args == 0 means that the caller is not interested in the argument
vector, but it would be a potential problem if somebody wanted to add
commands with optional arguments to qtest.

The man page does not contain all the chapters from the System Emulation
Users Guide, so some of the links that we've put into the qemu options
descriptions can not be resolved and thus the link names are used in the
man pages instead. These link names currently contain weird "_005f" letters
in the middle and just do not make any sense for the users. To avoid this
situation, replace the link names with more descriptive, natural text.

QEMU binaries no longer launch successfully with recent SystemTap
releases. This is because modular QEMU builds link the sdt semaphores
into the main binary instead of into the shared objects where they are
used. The symbol visibility of semaphores is 'hidden' and the dynamic
linker prints an error during module loading:
$ ./configure --enable-trace-backends=dtrace --enable-modules ...
...
Failed to open module: /builddir/build/BUILD/qemu-4.2.0/s390x-softmmu/../block-curl.so: undefined symbol: qemu_curl_close_semaphore
The long-term solution is to generate per-module dtrace .o files and
link them into the module instead of the main binary.
In the short term we can define STAP_SDT_V2 so dtrace(1) produces a .o
file with 'default' symbol visibility instead of 'hidden'. This
workaround is small and easier to merge for QEMU 5.2 and downstream
backports.

The zPCI group and function structures are big endian. However, we do
not consistently store them as big endian locally, and are missing some
conversions.
Let's just store the structures as host endian instead and convert to
big endian when actually handling the instructions retrieving the data.
Also fix the layout of ClpReqQueryPciGrp: g is actually only 8 bit. This
also fixes accesses on little endian hosts, and makes accesses on big
endian hosts consistent.

Hot-unplugging a vfio-pci device on s390x causes a QEMU crash:
qemu-system-s390x: ../softmmu/memory.c:2772:
do_address_space_destroy: Assertion `QTAILQ_EMPTY(&as->listeners)' failed.
In s390, the IOMMU address space is freed during device unplug but the
associated vfio-pci device may not yet be finalized and therefore may
still have a listener registered to the IOMMU address space.
Commit a2166410ad ("spapr_pci: Unregister listeners before destroying
the IOMMU address space") previously resolved this issue for spapr_pci.
We are now seeing this in s390x; it would seem the possibility for this
issue was already present but based on a bisect commit 2d24a64661
("device-core: use RCU for list of children of a bus") has now changed
the timing such that it is now readily reproducible.
Add logic to ensure listeners are removed before destroying the address
space.

The Error ** argument must be NULL, &error_abort, &error_fatal, or a
pointer to a variable containing NULL. Passing an argument of the
latter kind twice without clearing it in between is wrong: if the

qauthz_list_file_complete() is wrong that way: it passes @errp to

This series was largely built on the assumption that IPI numbers are
numerically equal to vCPU ids. Even if this happens to be the case
in practice with the default machine settings, this ceases to be true
if VSMT is set to a different value than the number of vCPUs per core.
This causes bogus IPI numbers to be created in KVM from a guest stand
point. This leads to unknow results in the guest, including crashes
or missing vCPUs (see BugLink) and even non-fatal oopses in current
KVM that lacks a check before accessing misconfigured HW (see [1]).
A tentative patch was sent (see [2]) but it seems too complex to be
merged in an RC. Since the original changes are essentially an
optimization, it seems safer to revert them for now. The damage is
done by commit acbdb9956f ("spapr/xive: Allocate IPIs independently
from the other sources") but the previous patches in the series are
really preparatory patches. So this reverts the whole series:

The TMP105 datasheet says that in Interrupt Mode (when TM==1) the device
signals an alert when the temperature equals or exceeds the T_high value and
then remains high until a device register is read or the device responds to
the SMBUS Alert Response address, or the device is put into Shutdown Mode.
Thereafter the Alert pin will only be re-signalled when temperature falls
below T_low; alert can then be cleared in the same set of ways, and the
device returns to its initial "alert when temperature goes above T_high"
mode. (If this textual description is confusing, see figure 3 in the
TI datasheet at https://www.ti.com/lit/gpn/tmp105 .)
We were misimplementing this as a simple "always alert if temperature is
above T_high or below T_low" condition, which gives a spurious alert on
startup if using the "T_high = 80 degrees C, T_low = 75 degrees C" reset
limit values.
Implement the correct (hysteresis) behaviour by tracking whether we
are currently looking for the temperature to rise over T_high or
for it to fall below T_low. Our implementation of the comparator
mode (TM==0) wasn't wrong, but rephrase it to match the way that
interrupt mode is now handled for clarity.

The TMP105 datasheet (https://www.ti.com/lit/gpn/tmp105) says that the
power-up reset values for the T_low and T_high registers are 80 degrees C
and 75 degrees C, which are 0x500 and 0x4B0 hex according to table 5. These
values are then shifted right by four bits to give the register reset
values, since both registers store the 12 bits of temperature data in bits
[15..4] of a 16 bit register.
We were resetting these registers to zero, which is problematic for Linux
guests which enable the alert interrupt and then immediately take an
unexpected overtemperature alert because the current temperature is above
freezing...

In commit 76346b6264 we tried to add a configure check that
the libgio pkg-config data was correct, which builds an executable
linked against it. Unfortunately this doesn't catch the problem
(missing static library dependency info), because a "do nothing" test
source file doesn't have any symbol references that cause the linker
to pull in .o files from libgio.a, and so we don't see the "missing
symbols from libmount" error that a full QEMU link triggers.
(The ineffective test went unnoticed because of a typo that
effectively disabled libgio unconditionally, but after commit
3569a5dfc1 fixed that, a static link of the system emulator on
Ubuntu stopped working again.)
Improve the gio test by having the test source fragment reference a
g_dbus function (which is what is indirectly causing us to end up
wanting functions from libmount).

In the mtspr helper we attempt to check for "is the timer disabled"
with "if (env->ttmr & TIMER_NONE)". This is wrong because TIMER_NONE
is zero and the condition is always false (Coverity complains about
the dead code.)
The correct check would be to test whether the TTMR_M field in the
register is equal to TIMER_NONE instead. However, the
cpu_openrisc_timer_update() function checks whether the timer is
enabled (it looks at cpu->env.is_counting, which is set to 0 via
cpu_openrisc_count_stop() when the TTMR_M field is set to
TIMER_NONE), so there's no need to check for "timer disabled" in the
target/openrisc code. Instead, simply remove the dead code.

redundant with the trace_ps2_write_mouse() event next to it.

Commit 02c4bdf1 tried to make signal=on the default for stdio chardevs
except for '-serial mon:stdio', but it forgot about QMP and accidentally
switched the QMP default from true (except for -nographic) to false
(always). The documentation was kept unchanged and still describes the
opposite of the old behaviour (which is an even older documentation
bug).
Fix all of this by making signal=true the default in ChardevStdio and
documenting it as such.

can theoretically cause a leak. In practice, it is extremely
unlikely that a guest is seeing a recursive MCE and has disabled
CR4.MCE between the first and the second error, but we can fix it
and we can also make a slight improvement on the logic: CR4.MCE=0
causes a triple fault even for a non-recursive machine check, so

The recently-added 'guest-get-disk' command returns a list of
GuestDiskInfo entries, which in turn have a 'dependents' field which
lists devices these entries are dependent upon. Thus, 'dependencies'
is a better name for this field. Address this by renaming the field
accordingly.
Additionally, 'dependents' is specified as non-optional, even though
it's not implemented for w32. This is misleading, since it gives users
the impression that a particular disk might not have dependencies,
when in reality that information is simply not known to the guest
agent. Address this by making 'dependents' an optional field, and only
marking it as in-use when the facilities to obtain this information are
available to the guest agent.

If an interrupt occurs between when we claim and complete an interrupt
we currently drop the interrupt in ibex_plic_irqs_set_pending(). This
somewhat matches hardware that also ignore the interrupt between the
claim and complete process.
In the case of hardware though the physical interrupt line will still
be asserted after we have completed the interrupt. This means we will
still act on the interrupt after the complete process. In QEMU we don't
and instead we drop the interrupt as it is never recorded.
This patch changed the behaviour of the Ibex PLIC so that we save all
interrupts that occur while we are between claiming and completing an
interrupt so that we can act on them after the completition process.
This fixes interrupts being dropped when running Tock on OpenTitain in
QEMU.

Contrary to what the check (and warning) in lo_init() claims, we can
announce submounts just fine even without statx() -- the check is based
on comparing both the mount ID and st_dev of parent and child. Without
statx(), we will not have the mount ID; but we always have st_dev.
The only problems we have (without statx() and its mount ID) are:
(1) Mounting the same device twice may lead to both trees being treated
as exactly the same tree by virtiofsd. But that is a problem that
is completely independent of mirroring host submounts in the guest.
Both submount roots will still show the FUSE_SUBMOUNT flag, because
their st_dev still differs from their respective parent.
(2) There is only one exception to (1), and that is if you mount a
device inside a mount of itself: Then, its st_dev will be the same
as that of its parent, and so without a mount ID, virtiofsd will not
be able to recognize the nested mount's root as a submount.
However, thanks to virtiofsd then treating both trees as exactly the
same tree, it will be caught up in a loop when the guest tries to
examine the nested submount, so the guest will always see nothing
but an ELOOP there. Therefore, this case is just fully broken
without statx(), whether we check for submounts (based on st_dev) or
not.
All in all, checking for submounts works well even without comparing the
mount ID (i.e., without statx()). The only concern is an edge case
that, without statx() mount IDs, is utterly broken anyway.
Thus, drop said check in lo_init().

The vhost-user protocol uses the Linux eventfd feature and is typically
connected to Linux kvm.ko ioeventfd and irqfd file descriptors. The
protocol specification in docs/interop/vhost-user.rst does not describe
how platforms without eventfd support work.
The QEMU vhost-user devices compile on other POSIX host operating
systems because eventfd usage is abstracted in QEMU. The libvhost-user
programs in contrib/ do not compile but we failed to notice since they
are not built by default.
Make it clear that vhost-user is only supported on Linux for the time
being. If someone wishes to support it on other platforms then the
details can be added to vhost-user.rst and CI jobs can test the feature
to prevent bitrot.

QEMU currently truncates the mmap_offset field when sending
VHOST_USER_ADD_MEM_REG and VHOST_USER_REM_MEM_REG messages. The struct
layout looks like this:
typedef struct VhostUserMemoryRegion {
uint64_t guest_phys_addr;
uint64_t memory_size;
uint64_t userspace_addr;
uint64_t mmap_offset;
} VhostUserMemoryRegion;
typedef struct VhostUserMemRegMsg {
uint32_t padding;
/* WARNING: there is a 32-bit hole here! */
VhostUserMemoryRegion region;
} VhostUserMemRegMsg;
The payload size is calculated as follows when sending the message in
hw/virtio/vhost-user.c:
msg->hdr.size = sizeof(msg->payload.mem_reg.padding) +
sizeof(VhostUserMemoryRegion);
This calculation produces an incorrect result of only 36 bytes.
sizeof(VhostUserMemRegMsg) is actually 40 bytes.
The consequence of this is that the final field, mmap_offset, is
truncated. This breaks x86_64 TCG guests on s390 hosts. Other guest/host
combinations may get lucky if either of the following holds:
1. The guest memory layout does not need mmap_offset != 0.
2. The host is little-endian and mmap_offset <= 0xffffffff so the
truncation has no effect.
Fix this by extending the existing 32-bit padding field to 64-bit. Now
the padding reflects the actual compiler padding. This can be verified
using pahole(1).
Also document the layout properly in the vhost-user specification. The
vhost-user spec did not document the exact layout. It would be
impossible to implement the spec without looking at the QEMU source
code.
Existing vhost-user frontends and device backends continue to work after
this fix has been applied. The only change in the wire protocol is that
QEMU now sets hdr.size to 40 instead of 36. If a vhost-user
implementation has a hardcoded size check for 36 bytes, then it will
fail with new QEMUs. Both QEMU and DPDK/SPDK don't check the exact
payload size, so they continue to work.

Commit 348b8d1a76 "macio: don't reference serial_hd() directly within the device"
removed the setting of user_creatable to false on the basis that the restriction
was due to the use of serial_hd() in macio_instance_init().
Unfortunately this isn't the full story since the PIC object property links
must still be set before the device is realized. Whilst it is possible to update
the macio device and Mac machines to resolve this, the fix is too invasive at
this point in the release cycle.
For now simply set user_creatable back to false in macio_class_init() to
prevent QEMU from segfaulting in anticipation of the proper fix arriving in

The ctucan driver defines types for its registers which are a union
of a uint32_t with a struct with bitfields for the individual
fields within that register. This is a bad idea, because bitfields
aren't portable. The ctu_can_fd_regs.h header works around the
most glaring of the portability issues by defining the
fields in two different orders depending on the setting of the
__LITTLE_ENDIAN_BITFIELD define. However, in ctucan_core.h this
is unconditionally set to 1, which is wrong for big-endian hosts.
Set it only if HOST_WORDS_BIGENDIAN is not set. There is no need
for a "have we defined it already" guard, because the only place
that should set it is ctucan_core.h, which has the usual
double-inclusion guard.

Coverity points out that in ctucan_send_ready_buffers() we
set buff_st_mask = 0xf << (i * 4) inside the loop, but then
we never use it before overwriting it later.
The only thing we use the mask for is as part of the code that is
inserting the new buff_st field into tx_status. That is more
comprehensibly written using deposit32(), so do that and drop the
mask variable entirely.
We also update the buff_st local variable at multiple points
during this function, but nothing can ever see these
intermediate values, so just drop those, write the final
TXT_TOK as a fixed constant value, and collapse the only
remaining set/use of buff_st down into an extract32().

The ctucan device has 4 CAN bus cores, each of which has a set of 20
32-bit registers for writing the transmitted data. The registers are
however not contiguous; each core's buffers is 0x100 bytes after
the last.
We got the checks on the address wrong in the ctucan_mem_write()
function:
* the first "is addr in range at all" check allowed
addr == CTUCAN_CORE_MEM_SIZE, which is actually the first
byte off the end of the range
* the decode of addresses into core-number plus offset in the
tx buffer for that core failed to check that the offset was
in range, so the guest could write off the end of the
tx_buffer[] array
NB: currently the values of CTUCAN_CORE_MEM_SIZE, CTUCAN_CORE_TXBUF_NUM,
etc, make "buff_num >= CTUCAN_CORE_TXBUF_NUM" impossible, but we
retain this as a runtime check rather than an assertion to permit
those values to be changed in future (in hardware they are
configurable synthesis parameters).
Fix the top level check, and check the offset is within the buffer.

Some platforms used the wrong definition of stack_t where the flags and
size fields were swapped or where the flags field had type ulong instead
of int.
Due to the presence of padding space in the structure and the prevalence
of little-endian machines this problem went unnoticed for a long time.
The type definitions have been cross-checked with the ones defined in
the Linux kernel v5.9, plus some older versions for a few architecture
that have been removed and Xilinx's kernel fork for NiosII [1].
The bsd-user headers remain unchanged as I don't know if they are wrong
or not.
