Denis V. Lunev 156af3ac98 block: fix possible reorder of flush operations
This patch reduce CPU usage of flush operations a bit. When we have one
flush completed we should kick only next operation. We should not start
all pending operations in the hope that they will go back to wait on
wait_queue.

Also there is a technical possibility that requests will get reordered
with the previous approach. After wakeup all requests are removed from
the wait queue. They become active and they are processed one-by-one
adding to the wait queue in the same order. Though new flush can arrive
while all requests are not put into the queue.

Denis V. Lunev cf56a3c632 mirror: fix request throttling in drive-mirror
There are 2 deficiencies here:
- mirror_iteration could start several requests inside. Thus we could
  simply have more in_flight requests than MAX_IN_FLIGHT.
- keeping this in mind throttling in mirror_run which is checking
  s->in_flight == MAX_IN_FLIGHT is wrong.

The patch adds the check and throttling into mirror_iteration and fixes
the check in mirror_run() to be sure.

With a bdrv_co_write_zeroes method on a target BDS and when this method

Denis V. Lunev f3c3b87dae qcow2: avoid extra flushes in qcow2
The problem with excessive flushing was found by a couple of performance
tests:
  - parallel directory tree creation (from 2 processes)
  - 32 cached writes + fsync at the end in a loop

For the first one results improved from 2.6 loops/sec to 3.5 loops/sec.
Each loop creates 10^3 directories with 10 files in each.

For the second one results improved from ~600 fsync/sec to ~1100
fsync/sec. Though, it was run on SSD so it probably won't show such
performance gain on rotational media.

qcow2_cache_flush() calls bdrv_flush() unconditionally after writing
cache entries of a particular cache. This can lead to as many as
2 additional fdatasyncs inside bdrv_flush.

We can simply skip all fdatasync calls inside qcow2_co_flush_to_os
as bdrv_flush for sure will do the job. These flushes are necessary to
keep the right order of writes to the different caches. Though this is
not necessary in the current code base as this ordering is ensured through
the flush in qcow2_cache_flush_dependency().

Denis V. Lunev f575f145f4 qcow2: fix condition in is_zero_cluster
We should check for (res & BDRV_BLOCK_ZERO) only. The situation when we
will have !(res & BDRV_BLOCK_DATA) and will not have BDRV_BLOCK_ZERO is
not possible for images with bdi.unallocated_blocks_are_zero == true.

For those images where it's false, however, it can happen and we must
not consider the data zeroed then or we would corrupt the image.

Denis V. Lunev 2928abce6d qcow2: improve qcow2_co_write_zeroes()
There is a possibility that qcow2_co_write_zeroes() will be called
with the partial block. This could be synthetically triggered with
    qemu-io -c "write -z 32k 4k"
and can happen in the real life in qemu-nbd. The latter happens under
the following conditions:
    (1) qemu-nbd is started with --detect-zeroes=on and is connected to the
        kernel NBD client
    (2) third party program opens kernel NBD device with O_DIRECT
    (3) third party program performs write operation with memory buffer
        not aligned to the page
In this case qcow2_co_write_zeroes() is unable to perform the operation
and mark entire cluster as zeroed and returns ENOTSUP. Thus the caller
switches to non-optimized version and writes real zeroes to the disk.

The patch creates a shortcut. If the block is read as zeroes, f.e. if
it is unallocated, the request is extended to cover full block.
User-visible situation with this block is not changed. Before the patch
the block is filled in the image with real zeroes. After that patch the
block is marked as zeroed in metadata. Thus any subsequent changes in
backing store chain are not affected.

Kevin, thank you for a cool suggestion.

Denis V. Lunev 4467c6c118 hyperv: cpu hotplug fix with HyperV enabled
With Hyper-V enabled CPU hotplug stops working. The CPU appears
in device manager on Windows but does not appear in peformance
monitor and control panel.

The root of the problem is the following. Windows checks
HV_X64_CPU_DYNAMIC_PARTITIONING_AVAILABLE bit in CPUID. The
presence of this bit is enough to cure the situation.

The bit should be set when CPU hotplug is allowed for HyperV VM.
The check that hot_add_cpu callback is defined is enough from the
protocol point of view. Though this callback is defined almost
always thus there is no need to export that knowledge in the
other way.

Denis V. Lunev 9596ef7c7b e1000: fix hang of win2k12 shutdown with flood ping
e1000 driver in Win2k12 is really well rotten. It 100% hangs on shutdown
of UP VM under flood ping. The guest checks card state and reinjects
itself interrupt in a loop. This is fatal for UP machine.

There is no good way to fix this misbehavior but to kludge it. The
emulation has interrupt throttling register aka ITR which limits
interrupt rate and allows the guest to proceed this phase.
There is no problem with this kludge for Linux guests - it adjust the
value of it itself.

On the other hand according to the initial research in
    commit e9845f0985
    Author: Vincenzo Maffione <v.maffione@gmail.com>
    Date:   Fri Aug 2 18:30:52 2013 +0200

    e1000: add interrupt mitigation support

    ...

    Interrupt mitigation boosts performance when the guest suffers from
    an high interrupt rate (i.e. receiving short UDP packets at high packet
    rate). For some numerical results see the following link
    http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/papers/20130520-rizzo-vm.pdf

this should also boost performance a bit.

Denis V. Lunev 60be634079 migration: fix deadlock
Release qemu global mutex before call synchronize_rcu().
synchronize_rcu() waiting for all readers to finish their critical
sections. There is at least one critical section in which we try
to get QGM (critical section is in address_space_rw() and
prepare_mmio_access() is trying to aquire QGM).

Both functions (migration_end() and migration_bitmap_extend())
are called from main thread which is holding QGM.

Thus there is a race condition that ends up with deadlock:
main thread     working thread
Lock QGA                |
|             Call KVM_EXIT_IO handler

synchronize_rcu() is    |

| prepare_mmio_access() is waiting for QGM
  \                   /

Denis V. Lunev e3816255bf balloon: add a feature bit to let Guest OS deflate balloon on oom
Excessive virtio_balloon inflation can cause invocation of OOM-killer,
when Linux is under severe memory pressure. Various mechanisms are
responsible for correct virtio_balloon memory management. Nevertheless it
is often the case that these control tools does not have enough time to
react on fast changing memory load. As a result OS runs out of memory and
invokes OOM-killer. The balancing of memory by use of the virtio balloon
should not cause the termination of processes while there are pages in the
balloon. Now there is no way for virtio balloon driver to free memory at
the last moment before some process get killed by OOM-killer.

This does not provide a security breach as balloon itself is running
inside Guest OS and is working in the cooperation with the host. Thus
some improvements from Guest side should be considered as normal.

To solve the problem, introduce a virtio_balloon callback which is
expected to be called from the oom notifier call chain in out_of_memory()
function. If virtio balloon could release some memory, it will make the
system return and retry the allocation that forced the out of memory
killer to run.

This behavior should be enabled if and only if appropriate feature bit
is set on the device. It is off by default.

This functionality was recently merged into vanilla Linux.

Denis V. Lunev 459b4e6612 block: align bounce buffers to page
The following sequence
    int fd = open(argv[1], O_RDWR | O_CREAT | O_DIRECT, 0644);
    for (i = 0; i < 100000; i++)
            write(fd, buf, 4096);
performs 5% better if buf is aligned to 4096 bytes.

The difference is quite reliable.

On the other hand we do not want at the moment to enforce bounce
buffering if guest request is aligned to 512 bytes.

The patch changes default bounce buffer optimal alignment to
MAX(page size, 4k). 4k is chosen as maximal known sector size on real
HDD.

The justification of the performance improve is quite interesting.
From the kernel point of view each request to the disk was split
by two. This could be seen by blktrace like this:
  9,0   11  1     0.000000000 11151  Q  WS 312737792 + 1023 [qemu-img]

  9,0    5  1     0.169071519 11151  Q  WS 312741888 + 1023 [qemu-img]
After the patch the pattern becomes normal:
  9,0    6  1     0.000000000 12422  Q  WS 314834944 + 1024 [qemu-img]

  9,0    6  4     0.000106276 12422  Q  WS 314838016 + 1024 [qemu-img]
and the amount of requests sent to disk (could be calculated counting
number of lines in the output of blktrace) is reduced about 2 times.

Both qemu-img and qemu-io are affected while qemu-kvm is not. The guest
does his job well and real requests comes properly aligned (to page).

Denis V. Lunev 4196d2f030 block: minimal bounce buffer alignment
The patch introduces new concept: minimal memory alignment for bounce
buffers. Original so called "optimal" value is actually minimal required
value for aligment. It should be used for validation that the IOVec
is properly aligned and bounce buffer is not required.

Though, from the performance point of view, it would be better if
bounce buffer or IOVec allocated by QEMU will be aligned stricter.

The patch does not change any alignment value yet.

Denis V. Lunev 19f5dc1591 block/parallels: optimize linear image expansion
Plain image expansion spends a lot of time to update image file size.
This seriously affects the performance. The following simple test
  qemu_img create -f parallels -o cluster_size=64k ./1.hds 64G
  qemu_io -n -c "write -P 0x11 0 1024M" ./1.hds
could be improved if the format driver will pre-allocate some space
in the image file with a reasonable chunk.

This patch preallocates 128 Mb using bdrv_write_zeroes, which should
normally use fallocate() call inside. Fallback to older truncate()
could be used as a fallback using image open options thanks to the
previous patch.

The benefit is around 15%.

Denis V. Lunev d61790112f block/parallels: add prealloc-mode and prealloc-size open paramemets
This is preparational commit for tweaks in Parallels image expansion.
The idea is that enlarge via truncate by one data block is slow. It
would be much better to use fallocate via bdrv_write_zeroes and
expand by some significant amount at once.

Original idea with sequential file writing to the end of the file without
fallocate/truncate would be slower than this approach if the image is
expanded with several operations:
- each image expanding means file metadata update, i.e. filesystem
  journal write. Truncate/write to newly truncated space update file
  metadata twice thus truncate removal helps. With fallocate call
  inside bdrv_write_zeroes file metadata is updated only once and
  this should happen infrequently thus this approach is the best one
  for the image expansion
- tail writes are ordered, i.e. the guest IO queue could not be sent
  immediately to the host introducing additional IO delays

This patch just adds proper parameters into BDRVParallelsState and
performs options parsing in parallels_open.

Denis V. Lunev 0d31c7c200 block/parallels: delay writing to BAT till bdrv_co_flush_to_os
The idea is that we do not need to immediately sync BAT to the image as
from the guest point of view there is a possibility that IO is lost
even in the physical controller until flush command was finished.
bdrv_co_flush_to_os is exactly the right place for this purpose.

Technically the patch uses loaded BAT data as a cache and performs
actual on-disk metadata updates in parallels_co_flush_to_os callback.

This patch speed ups
  qemu-img create -f parallels -o cluster_size=64k ./1.hds 64G
  qemu-io -f parallels -c "write -P 0x11 0 1024k" 1.hds

from 160 Mb/sec to 190 Mb/sec on SSD disk.

Denis V. Lunev 6dd6b9f144 block/parallels: implement incorrect close detection
The software driver must set inuse field in Parallels header to
0x746F6E59 when the image is opened in read-write mode. The presence of
this magic in the header on open forces image consistency check.

There is an unfortunate trick here. We can not check for inuse in
parallels_check as this will happen too late. It is possible to do
that for simple check, but during the fix this would always report
an error as the image was opened in BDRV_O_RDWR mode. Thus we save
the flag in BDRVParallelsState for this.

On the other hand, nothing should be done to clear inuse in
parallels_check. Generic close will do the job right.

Denis V. Lunev fa21e6faa6 nbd: fix max_discard/max_transfer_length
nbd_co_discard calls nbd_client_session_co_discard which uses uint32_t
as the length in bytes of the data to discard due to the following
definition:

struct nbd_request {
    uint32_t magic;
    uint32_t type;
    uint64_t handle;
    uint64_t from;
    uint32_t len; <-- the length of data to be discarded, in bytes
} QEMU_PACKED;

Thus we should limit bl_max_discard to UINT32_MAX >> BDRV_SECTOR_BITS to
avoid overflow.

NBD read/write code uses the same structure for transfers. Fix
max_transfer_length accordingly.

Denis V. Lunev 1cdc3239f1 block: use fallocate(FALLOC_FL_PUNCH_HOLE) & fallocate(0) to write zeroes
This sequence works efficiently if FALLOC_FL_ZERO_RANGE is not supported.
Unfortunately, FALLOC_FL_ZERO_RANGE is supported on really modern systems
and only for a couple of filesystems. FALLOC_FL_PUNCH_HOLE is much more
mature.

The sequence of 2 operations FALLOC_FL_PUNCH_HOLE and 0 is necessary due
to the following reasons:
- FALLOC_FL_PUNCH_HOLE creates a hole in the file, the file becomes
  sparse. In order to retain original functionality we must allocate
  disk space afterwards. This is done using fallocate(0) call
- fallocate(0) without preceeding FALLOC_FL_PUNCH_HOLE will do nothing
  if called above already allocated areas of the file, i.e. the content
  will not be zeroed

This should increase the performance a bit for not-so-modern kernels.

Denis V. Lunev d50d822219 block/raw-posix: call plain fallocate in handle_aiocb_write_zeroes
There is a possibility that we are extending our image and thus writing
zeroes beyond the end of the file. In this case we do not need to care
about the hole to make sure that there is no data in the file under
this offset (pre-condition to fallocate(0) to work). We could simply call
fallocate(0).

This improves the performance of writing zeroes even on really old
platforms which do not have even FALLOC_FL_PUNCH_HOLE.

Before the patch do_fallocate was used when either
CONFIG_FALLOCATE_PUNCH_HOLE or CONFIG_FALLOCATE_ZERO_RANGE are defined.
Now the story is different. CONFIG_FALLOCATE is defined when Linux
fallocate is defined, posix_fallocate is completely different story
(CONFIG_POSIX_FALLOCATE). CONFIG_FALLOCATE is mandatory prerequite
for both CONFIG_FALLOCATE_PUNCH_HOLE and CONFIG_FALLOCATE_ZERO_RANGE
thus we are on the safe side.
