Luiz Capitulino fae947b096 memory: exit when hugepage allocation fails if mem-prealloc
When -mem-prealloc is passed on the command-line, the expected
behavior is to exit if the hugepage allocation fails. However,
this behavior is broken since commit cc57501dee which made
hugepage allocation fall back to regular ram in case of faliure.

This commit restores the expected behavior for -mem-prealloc.

Luiz Capitulino 9740618cd2 MAINTAINERS: New maintainer for QMP and QAPI
Markus is taking over maintership of QMP and the QAPI from
me. Markus has always been a great reviewer and contributor
to those subsystems. In the last few months he's also doing
pull requests that are a lot more relevant than the ones I
was able to do. So, this is a natural move.

I'm still the maintainer of HMP and QObjects, but I'm
looking for someone to take over those too.

PS: This commit also fixes the file listing for the QMP

Luiz Capitulino 46abb81240 balloon: improve error msg when adding second device
A VM supports only one balloon device, but due to several changes
in infrastructure the error message got messed up when trying
to add a second device. Fix it.

Before this fix

Command-line:

qemu-qmp: -device virtio-balloon-pci,id=balloon0: Adding balloon handler failed
qemu-qmp: -device virtio-balloon-pci,id=balloon0: Device 'virtio-balloon-pci' could not be initialized

{
	"error": {
		"class": "GenericError",

After this fix

Command-line:

qemu-qmp: -device virtio-balloon-pci,id=balloon0: Device 'virtio-balloon-pci' could not be initialized

HMP:

Luiz Capitulino 1f9296b51a virtio-balloon: fix integer overflow in memory stats feature
When a QMP client changes the polling interval time by setting
the guest-stats-polling-interval property, the interval value
is stored and manipulated as an int64_t variable.

However, the balloon_stats_change_timer() function, which is
used to set the actual timer with the interval value, takes
an int instead, causing an overflow for big interval values.

This commit fix this bug by changing balloon_stats_change_timer()
to take an int64_t and also it limits the polling interval value
to UINT_MAX to avoid other kinds of overflow.

BLOCK_IO_ERROR events are logged by libvirt, which helps with
post mortem analysis of guests. However, one information that
we miss today is a human readable string describing the cause
of the I/O error.

this string is a debugging aid for humans, meaning that it

Luiz Capitulino c7c2ff0c7e block: extend BLOCK_IO_ERROR event with nospace indicator
Management software, such as RHEV's vdsm, want to be able to allocate
disk space on demand. The basic use case is to start a VM with a small
disk and then the disk is enlarged when QEMU hits a ENOSPC condition.

To this end, the management software has to be notified when QEMU
encounters ENOSPC. The solution implemented by this commit is simple:
it extends the BLOCK_IO_ERROR with a 'nospace' key, which is true
when QEMU is stopped due to ENOSPC.

Note that support for querying this event is already present in
query-block by means of the 'io-status' key. Also, the new 'nospace'
BLOCK_IO_ERROR field shares the same semantics with 'io-status',
which basically means that werror= has to be set to either
'stop' or 'enospc' to enable 'nospace'.

Finally, this commit also updates the 'io-status' key doc in the
schema with a list of supported device models.

Luiz Capitulino dfab489214 qmp: add qmp-events.txt back
The conversion of events to the QAPI, resulted in the removal of the
docs/qmp/qmp-events.txt file. This was done to avoid having duplicated
information between qmp-events.txt and qapi-event.json.

However, qmp-events.txt contains examples and we're still not sure
how to proper install QAPI docs in the host. To avoid harming users,
it's better to re-add qmp-events.txt for now and deal with the

GDB returns this error because x86_cpu_get_phys_page_debug() doesn't support

Luiz Capitulino c950114286 migration: qmp_migrate(): keep working after syntax error
If a user or QMP client enter a bad syntax for the migrate
command in QMP/HMP, then the migrate command will never succeed
from that point on.

For example, if you enter:

migrate: Parameter 'uri' expects a valid migration protocol

Then the migrate command will always fail from now on:

(qemu) migrate tcp:0:4444
migrate: There's a migration process in progress

The problem is that qmp_migrate() sets the migration status to
MIG_STATE_SETUP and doesn't reset it on syntax error. This bug
was introduced by commit 29ae8a4133.

Luiz Capitulino 8f91ad8a1b qapi: qapi-commands: fix possible leaks on visitor dealloc
In qmp-marshal.c the dealloc visitor calls use the same errp
pointer of the input visitor calls. This means that if any of
the input visitor calls fails, then the dealloc visitor will
return early, before freeing the object's memory.

Here's an example, consider this code:

int qmp_marshal_input_block_passwd(Monitor *mon, const QDict *qdict, QObject **ret)
{
	[...]

    char * device = NULL;
    char * password = NULL;

    mi = qmp_input_visitor_new_strict(QOBJECT(args));
    v = qmp_input_get_visitor(mi);
    visit_type_str(v, &device, "device", errp);
    visit_type_str(v, &password, "password", errp);
    qmp_input_visitor_cleanup(mi);

    if (error_is_set(errp)) {
        goto out;
    }
    qmp_block_passwd(device, password, errp);

out:
    md = qapi_dealloc_visitor_new();
    v = qapi_dealloc_get_visitor(md);
    visit_type_str(v, &device, "device", errp);
    visit_type_str(v, &password, "password", errp);
    qapi_dealloc_visitor_cleanup(md);

	[...]

    return 0;
}

Consider errp != NULL when the out label is reached, we're going
to leak device and password.

This patch fixes this by always passing errp=NULL for dealloc
visitors, meaning that we always try to free them regardless of
any previous failure. The above example would then be:

out:
    md = qapi_dealloc_visitor_new();
    v = qapi_dealloc_get_visitor(md);
    visit_type_str(v, &device, "device", NULL);
    visit_type_str(v, &password, "password", NULL);
    qapi_dealloc_visitor_cleanup(md);

Luiz Capitulino fbc2ed9518 target-i386: fix abort on bad PML4E/PDPTE/PDE/PTE addresses
The code used to walk IA-32e page-tables, and possibly PAE page-tables,
uses the bit mask ~0xfff to get the next PML4E/PDPTE/PDE/PTE address.

However, as we use a uint64_t to store the resulting address, that mask
gets expanded to 0xfffffffffffff000 which not only ends up selecting
reserved bits but also selects the XD bit (execute-disable) which
happens to be enabled by Windows 8, causing qemu_get_ram_ptr() to abort.

This commit fixes that problem by replacing ~0xfff by a correct mask
that only selects the address bit range (ie. bits 51:12).

Luiz Capitulino 48c043d0d1 hmp: human-monitor-command: stop using the Memory chardev driver
The Memory chardev driver was added because, as the Monitor's output
buffer was static, we needed a way to accumulate the output of an
HMP commmand when ran by human-monitor-command.

However, the Monitor's output buffer is now dynamic, so it's possible
for the human-monitor-command to use it instead of the Memory chardev
driver.

This commit does that change, but there are two important
observations about it:

 1. We need a way to signal to the Monitor that it shouldn't call
    chardev functions when flushing its output. This is done
    by adding a new flag to the Monitor object called skip_flush
	(which is set to true by qmp_human_monitor_command())

 2. The current code has buffered semantics: QMP clients will
    only see a command's output if it flushes its output with
	a new-line character. This commit changes this to unbuffered,
	which means that QMP clients will see a command's output
	whenever the command prints anything.

	I don't think this will matter in practice though, as I believe
	all HMP commands print the new-line character anyway.

Luiz Capitulino e1f2641b59 Monitor: Make output buffer dynamic
Commit f628926bb4 changed monitor_flush()
to retry on qemu_chr_fe_write() errors. However, the Monitor's output
buffer can keep growing while the retry is not issued and this can
cause the buffer to overflow.

To reproduce this issue, just start qemu and type on the Monitor:

(qemu) ?

This will cause an assertion to trig.

To fix this problem this commit makes the Monitor buffer dynamic,
which means that it can grow as much as needed.

Luiz Capitulino 7e6ccd9c15 balloon: re-enable balloon stats
The statistics are now available through device properties via a
polling mechanism. First a client has to enable polling, then it
can query available stats.

Polling is enabled by setting an update interval (in seconds)
to a property named guest-stats-polling-interval, like this:

{ "execute": "qom-set",
  "arguments": { "path": "/machine/peripheral-anon/device[1]",
                 "property": "guest-stats-polling-interval", "value": 4 } }

Then the available stats can be retrieved by querying the
guest-stats property. The returned object is a dict containing
all available stats. Example:

{ "execute": "qom-get",
  "arguments": { "path": "/machine/peripheral-anon/device[1]",
  "property": "guest-stats" } }

{
    "return": {

This is a beneficial change for two reasons:

  1. FHS states that programs must not assume that files in /tmp will

	 the purpose of the freeze status file

  2. FHS dictates that /var/run must be cleaned on boot, this

Before the qapi conversion, the sendkey command could be used to
send key codes in hex directly to the guest. In HMP, this would
be like:

 (qemu) sendkey 0xdc

However, the qapi conversion broke this, as it only supports sending
QKeyCode values to the guest. That's a regression.

This commit fixes the problem by adding hex value support down
the QMP interface, qmp_send_key().

In more detail, this commit:

 1. Adds the KeyValue union. This can represent an hex value or
    a QKeyCode value

 2. *Changes* the QMP send-key command to take an KeyValue argument
    instead of a QKeyCode one

 3. Adapt hmp_send_key() to the QMP interface changes

Item 2 is an incompatible change, but as we're in development phase
(and this command has been merged a few weeks ago) this shouldn't be
a problem.

Finally, it's not possible to split this commit without breaking the
build.

Luiz Capitulino 25df49f6eb qmp: add SUSPEND_DISK event
Emitted when the guest makes a request to enter S4 state.

There are three possible ways of having this event, as described here:

 http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2012-07/msg02307.html

I've decided to add a new event and make it indepedent of SHUTDOWN.
This means that the SHUTDOWN event will eventually follow the
SUSPEND_DISK event.

I've choosen this way because of two reasons:

 1. Having an indepedent event makes it possible to query for its
    existence by using query-events

 2. In the future, we may allow the user to change what QEMU should
    do as a result of the guest entering S4. So it's a good idea to

Luiz Capitulino 17c8660b0b qmp: emit the WAKEUP event when the guest is put to run
Today, the WAKEUP event is emitted when a wakeup _request_ is made.
This could be the system_wakeup command, for example.

A better semantic would be to emit the event when the guest is
already running, as that's what matters in the end. This commit does
that change.

In theory, this could break compatibility. In practice, it shouldn't
happen though, as clients shouldn't rely on timing characteristics of
the events. That is, a client relying that the guest is not running
when the event arrives may break if the event arrives after the guest
is already running.

This commit also adds the missing documentation for the WAKEUP event.

Luiz Capitulino 1405819637 qmp: don't emit the RESET event on wakeup from S3
QEMU is basically using reset logic when waking up from S3. This
causes the QMP RESET event to be emitted, which is wrong. Also,
the runstate checks done in reset are not necessary for S3 wakeup.

Fix this by untangling wakeup from reset logic and passing
VMRESET_SILENT to qemu_system_reset() to avoid emitting the RESET
event.

Luiz Capitulino 08b76b9fc3 scripts: qapi-commands.py: qmp-commands.h: include qdict.h
qmp-commands.h declares several functions that have arguments of
type QDict. However, qdict.h is not included. This will cause a
build breakage when a file includes qmp-commands.h but doesn't
include qdict.h.
